Sabsige Soppu Kootu (Dill Leaves Kootu) – A Wholesome Karnataka Comfort Food

There are certain dishes that quietly become a part of everyday life, not because they are extravagant, but because they nourish both the body and the soul. Sabsige Soppu Kootu, a humble Karnataka-style curry made with fresh dill leaves and lentils, is one such recipe that instantly transports me to simple home-cooked meals shared around the family table.

Growing up, leafy greens were never treated as an afterthought. Every season brought its own bounty, and dill leaves, or Sabsige Soppu as they are lovingly called in Kannada, found their way into our kitchen in many forms. Their unmistakable aroma, slightly earthy and pleasantly herbaceous, blended beautifully with creamy cooked lentils and a fragrant coconut-spice paste, creating a dish that was both hearty and comforting.

This Karnataka-style Sabsige Soppu Kootu celebrates the beauty of simple ingredients. Fresh dill leaves are gently cooked with lentils before being combined with freshly grated coconut, roasted spices, and a light and nutty tempering that fills the kitchen with an irresistible aroma. The result is a mildly spiced, nutritious curry that pairs wonderfully with steamed rice, chapatis, or even millet for a wholesome meal.

Beyond its comforting flavours, dill leaves are also valued for their nutritional benefits. Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fibre, they have long been a part of traditional Indian home cooking. Combined with protein-rich lentils, this kootu becomes a nourishing dish that’s perfect for everyday meals while remaining light on the stomach.

What I love most about this recipe is how effortlessly it reminds us that delicious food doesn’t need elaborate ingredients or complicated techniques. Sometimes, the simplest recipes are the ones we return to time and again, carrying with them the warmth of family kitchens and cherished memories.

Whether you’re discovering dill leaves for the first time or recreating a recipe that reminds you of home, I hope this Sabsige Soppu Kootu finds a regular place at your table, just as it has at mine.
